The British children’s author revealed her long-term relationship with a woman in 2020.
The cherished writer, renowned for her subtle portrayals of early hardships, has discovered an unanticipated new readership following her disclosure of her sexual orientation.
“I’m very touched to be thought of as a gay icon, it’s an absolute delight,” she tells the news.
She is 78 years old and says she doesn’t exactly envision herself “rampaging around with a rainbow flag, but I highly approve of anyone who does.”
Wilson recently released her first adult book, which examines same-sex relationships among other things.
The Girls series’ follow-up, Think Again, centers on Ellie Allard’s life as she approaches forty and her closest friends, Magda and Nadine.
Wilson claims the idea “has been on my mind for years and started when my daughter asked me if I ever wonder what happens to my characters when they grow up”.
Wilson claims that after penning over 100 books, the time seemed appropriate to pen her first adult novel.
“In real time the girls would be hitting 40,” she reflects, “and that’s a significant age where you have to make big decisions, and, for some people, life doesn’t look like what you dreamt of as a teenager”.
