The dating app Bumble has issued an apology for advertisements it claimed denigrated non-sexting women.
“A vow of celibacy is not the answer” and “Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun” were among the slogans used in the marketing campaign.
The commercials were meant to make “a community frustrated by modern dating” laugh, according to Bumble.
However, many claimed the commercials were ostentatious and contradicted the company’s professed goal of uplifting women.
Model and actress Jordan Emanuel, who has openly discussed her desire to abstain from sex for a year, commented, “It’s appalling to see a dating platform undermine women’s choices in a world fighting for respect and autonomy over our bodies.”
