The animal rights organization PETA wrote Allen an open letter stating that it was “appalled” to hear that she had given the dog back and that animals “should never be treated as accessories to be discarded when they become inconvenient”.
We implore you, therefore, please refrain from getting a new puppy,” PETA continued.
During a Thursday Miss Me? podcast episode, Allen disclosed that she had adopted the dog during the COVID-19 pandemic. She then went on to say, “But then it ate my passport and so I took her back to the home.”
In a Sunday Instagram story, Allen provided an update, writing, “I have never been accused of mistreating an animal, and I’ve found this whole week very distressing.”
Additionally, she criticized social media users’ responses, calling them “furiously reacting to a deliberately distorted cobbling together of quotes designed to make people angry”.
The puppy, Mary, “was a very badly behaved dog, and I really tried very hard with her, but it just didn’t work out, and the passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak,” Allen had said on Thursday’s podcast.
