JAKARTA: Four days after intense rains in North Sumatra province caused flash flooding and landslides that claimed 15 lives, Indonesian rescuers are still looking for seven individuals who have gone missing, an official said Tuesday.
Following Saturday’s severe weather, disaster agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari reported that four people perished in flash floods in Deli Serdang district and eleven people perished in landslides in Karo, Padang Lawas, and Tapanuli Selatan districts.
According to Abdul, about 100 rescuers, police, and military personnel were still looking for the seven missing, but their efforts had been hindered by the continuous rain.
Rain continues to fall throughout the afternoon into the evening. “This is the biggest challenge as we look for the missing individuals,” he added.
