Their first son had just been born, thanks to his wife Ruth. However, Finn was delivered pale and limp following a painful delivery, requiring immediate resuscitation.
Ruth was hurt as well; she needed surgery for a major childbirth tear.
“What do you want me to do?” Martin asked his wife as a sea of physicians prepared to take their son from them filled the room at the birthing center in London. Will I leave with Finn or stay with you?”
She ordered him to follow Finn. A feeling of powerlessness overcame him as the plastic crib holding his newborn son was wheeled out of the room.
His voice breaking, he replies there was nothing I could do for any of them.
As we converse, Ruth and Martin both start crying and alternately sob to console one another. However, they decline my request to take a break. They understand that telling Finn’s story is what matters right now.
