In what would be its largest victory in nearly two years of conflict, Sudan’s army announced on Saturday that it had advanced into the central city of Wad Madani and was driving out its paramilitary enemies, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The city is the seat of El Gezira state, a commerce and agricultural center that the RSF has controlled since December 2023. The army uploaded a video that seemed to show troops inside the city.
The conflict that started in April 2023 over disagreements over the merger of the two forces, which has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in history with the displacement of over 12 million people, may change course if the state is recaptured as a whole.
