ISLAMABAD In response to international protests, the federal government amended the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act of 2018 to make begging illegal.
The Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which the interior ministry proposed, aims to amend the current law by including “organized beggary” in Section 3.
Pakistan’s diplomatic missions in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as well as those in Iraq and Malaysia, have confirmed that the subject of begging has been brought up by several countries, which is why the relevant statute has been changed.
