The 78-year-old was expected to depart on Sunday afternoon for the Brics meeting, which brings together key developing nations such as China, South Africa, India, Brazil, and Russia.
The president was urged to temporarily avoid long-haul flights by a renowned hospital in the city, Brasília.
Instead, he will now join the meetings through a video link.
According to a statement from Brasília’s Sírio-Libanês Hospital, the president was told not to travel vast distances but was nevertheless allowed to carry on with his regular duties.
It further stated that Lula is under medical observation after suffering a cut on the back of his skull.
According to the president’s office, he will continue his other responsibilities while participating digitally in the summit from Brasília.
No information on his injury was released by his office.
The president received five stitches and was sent home on Saturday, according to local media, which cited hospital physicians.
