David Lammy, the foreign secretary, declared on Monday that 30 out of the 350 licenses for the transfer of armaments to Israel will be halted.
The action, which coincided with US officials reiterating their support for Israel, represented the UK’s first major break from the US since the assaults of October 7.
Kamala Harris declared to news last week that she would not back down from her support of Israel.
I want to be crystal clear. She declared, “I’m unwavering and unequivocal in my commitment to Israel’s defense and its ability to defend itself.”
The US Department of State’s Matt Miller then stated on Tuesday that the US would not be halting arms supplies and that the UK’s decision had no effect on the US.
While acknowledging that the two nations had communicated before to the statement, Mr. Miller said that the US stance had not changed.
Mr. Miller sidestepped a question on the US’s feelings over the UK’s decision by saying, “The UK is a sovereign country; ultimately, it’s their decision to make.”
