during which she was attacked with a can of red paint, Sandy Ryan of Britain says that “an immediate rematch should be ordered” with American Mikaela Mayer.
Ryan lost his WBO welterweight championship against Mayer on Friday after a majority decision.
The 31-year-old Derby woman was doused in red paint prior to the fight as she walked from her hotel to The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
In addition, Ryan said on Monday that she had experienced a “disgusting and pathetic smear campaign” and received threats on fight day.
She said that her team received threatening letters, that “defamatory” fliers were handed out before and after the fight, and that she was told to leave New York.
The 34-year-old Mayer declared after her win that she was “shocked” to learn about the paint incident and that neither she nor her squad was involved.
Ryan wrote on social media on Monday, saying, “Given everything that’s happened, I think an immediate rematch should be ordered.”
“I thought I did enough to keep my championship, even though I felt the fight was tight. I know many other reputable boxing observers also had me winning by two rounds, in addition to news.”
Mayer’s scores were 97-93 and 96-94 on two of the scorecards, and 95-95 for a third judge.
Although the two have known one another since their amateur days, they have developed a fierce disagreement over.
