Jamieson Greer will serve as US President-elect Donald Trump’s trade representative when he assumes office on January 20, 2025.
Trump made the remark after threatening to impose new tariffs, or charges on imported goods, on Canada, Mexico, and China in an effort to pressure them to stop the illegal flow of people and drugs into the US.
Greer, a trade attorney, served during Trump’s first term as president and was instrumental in enacting tariffs on Chinese imports.
Greer’s responsibilities would include “reining in the country’s massive trade deficit, defending American manufacturing, agriculture, and services, and opening up export markets everywhere,” according to a statement released by Trump.
