Traveling supporters reacted angrily to the goalless friendly in Portugal against a 203rd-ranked Gibraltar team, with some yelling, “we want Page out.”
Page, who had faced criticism earlier in his career, said that he understood why he was being ridiculed, but Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Tom King and midfielder Wes Burns of Ipswich Town stood up for their manager.
“We wholeheartedly support the manager. The game’s first-ever half-time substitute, King, remarked, “We fully support everything he and his staff are doing.”
“The jeers are a little out of place, but we are the victims of our own popularity.
After losing to Poland in a penalty shootout in March, we were just one kick away from qualifying for another big event.
King said that Wales had performed “below the level” against Gibraltar.
“But if you’re talking about what’s coming in the future, there’s a real group of young players coming through,” he said.
“I wish there weren’t any boos; that kind of taints it (his debut), but fans are free to think whatever they want. They have come a long way, and they want to see progress toward their goals.
