DAMASCUS: Less than two months after spearheading a campaign that overthrew Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been proclaimed president for a transitional period, strengthening his hold on power.
The military command that spearheaded the campaign against Assad said that the Syrian constitution was suspended and that Sharaa was also authorized to establish a provisional legislative council for a transitional time.
The military commanders who participated in the attack, which was led by Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) faction, met and made the decisions.
Speaking to the conference, Sharaa stated that filling a void in the Syrian government “in a legitimate and legal way” should be the country’s top priority.
