Human-wildlife conflict has been transformed into “human-wildlife coexistence” because to the installation of AI-based trail cameras by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Pakistan in 2022 at key areas in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region, which is home to the endangered leopard species.
The WWF announced on the occasion of World Snow Leopard Day on Wednesday that the targeted sites have seen a considerable decrease in snow leopard (Panthera uncia) attacks on livestock, a major cause of human-leopard conflict, thanks to this new technology.
The finding came at the same time that AI was used last week to save a herd of roughly 60 elephants that were crossing railroad tracks in the Indian state of northeastern Assam.
The train’s loco pilots were prompted to apply when the AI-based intrusion detection system (IDS) warned them of the herd of elephants crossing the tracks.
