Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, the president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), ordered the administration on Saturday to revoke the contentious presidential legislation that set off protests in the area.
The president instructed the government to free everyone jailed under the “Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Ordinance, 2024” in a letter to AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, according to a statement.
According to the statement, the AJK government acted on the president’s directives right away.
After negotiations with the government-appointed committee failed, the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) started organizing lengthy marches against the controversial presidential edict and its detained members approaching AJK entry points.
In a number of cities, the JAAC-called wheel-jam and shutter-down strike entered its third day.
