Following in the traditions of the oppressive colonial overlords, the ruling class immediately reestablished the despotic feudalistic politics they had grown accustomed to before independence in 1947. As a result, the laws that had controlled the press prior to independence made their way into the newly sovereign and independent nation’s body politics. Since then, 95% of press-related laws implemented after independence have been “anti-freedom of the press and expression.” All of the colonial-era media regulations that were used to stifle or control the press were kept in place.
Therefore, there have been very few exceptions to the “laws that chain the media” that have been introduced by civilian and military governments throughout the course of the last 76 years.
