Although Taiwan’s LGBT politicians have made progress, their fight is far from over.

It was the first location in the region to legalize same-sex unions back in 2019. It also acknowledges LGBTQ+ transnational partnerships and permits gay couples to adopt.
Activists estimate that in addition to Ms. Huang, there are currently over a dozen LGBTQ+ lawmakers in Taiwan.
These include Ms. Huang and lesbian Taipei City Councilor Miao Poya, who together made up the two most well-known LGBT lawmakers in the January elections. In 2016, Audrey Tang was chosen as the minister of digital affairs by then President Tsai Ing-wen, making her the first transgender cabinet minister on the island and in history.
However, others fear a return to conservative politics, while others look forward to a day when sexuality is never even brought up.
