The savage 2007 murder of her flatmate, 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, in their shared apartment in the Italian university town of Perugia ultimately led to the American woman’s acquittal.
However, she was not freed until 2011, following four years of incarceration in Italy.
The sole conviction against Knox that survived five court decisions that finally cleared her was slander for falsely accusing a Congolese bar owner of the murder during an interrogation.
What does Knox’s court ruling mean?
Before the hearing, photographers swarmed Knox, her husband, and her legal team as they approached the courthouse. Now 36 years old, the woman is a mother of two young children.
Knox was convicted guilty of defamation by the Italian court and given a three-year sentence.
She had been given a three-year term for falsely claiming that Ms. Kercher had been killed in a previous case by Patrick Lumumba, the owner of the bar. At the time of the murder, Knox worked part-time for Mr. Lumumba.
Since the term counts as time she has already served in prison, she will not be serving any additional time behind bars.
Following the court’s reading of the verdict, Knox sobbed and gave her husband a hug.
“Amanda is very upset; she was hoping to finally clear her name,” her attorney stated.
