More than 20,000 species of bees are known to exist, and because they support plant growth, they are essential to life as we know it.
This project, a partnership between artist Wolfgang Buttress and the World Museum in Liverpool, illustrates how the contemporary world is affecting bees using close-up photography, sound, sculpture, and light.
Buttress stated, “Bees can be seen as sentinels of the earth.”
“They are dying in unprecedented numbers, and their health and well-being reflect the health of the planet.
“Their existential challenges reflect our own – they die and suffer, we die and suffer.”
Numerous causes, such as the usage of pesticides, habitat degradation, and intensive farming, pose a threat to bee populations.
