Amazon is being sued for allegedly allowing a man from West Virginia to use a hidden camera to spy on a Brazilian girl who was underage.
The device, which resembles a clothes hook, was purchased from Amazon and used to record the girl.
The suit alleges that Amazon failed to remove the camera from its platform despite inspecting it three times and knowing the potential harm it could cause.
The man from West Virginia faces criminal charges.
Darrel Wells of West Virginia is accused of secretly recording an underage Brazilian foreign exchange student he was hosting at his home in 2021.
He allegedly used a clothes hook to cover a camera in order to film her in her private spaces, like the bathroom and bedroom. He had 600 pictures of child pornography in his possession, the prosecution claimed. Ten counts of criminal invasion of privacy and child pornography are brought against Wells.
Legal action brought by the minor against Amazon
While the criminal case is underway, the underage girl is also suing Amazon. She claims Wells bought the hidden camera on Amazon.
