Amazon has announced a breakthrough in quantum computing, a technology plagued by technical issues but promising enormous processing power. This makes it the third computer company to do so in as many months.
Ocelot, a prototype chip developed on “cat qubit” technology—a technique named after the well-known “Schrödinger’s cat” thinking experiment—was unveiled by the company.
The chip aims to make quantum computers error-free, which is one of the main obstacles to their advancement.
According to Amazon, their efforts, when combined with other recent developments in the field, indicate that practical quantum computers will probably be available sooner than previously believed.
But how soon will these devices be strong enough to be practically useful for a variety of commercial applications?
