Just after 2:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the vehicle swerved off a road in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn East and slammed through a fence into an outdoor table occupied by five youngsters.
Eleven-year-old Jack Davey passed away after being admitted to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to Victoria Police, two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old boy were also gravely injured and sent to the hospital.
According to Auburn South Primary School headteacher Marcus Wicher, the collision “can only be described as a complete tragedy.”
“Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with Jack’s family and friends, as well as with the four students who are still in the hospital,” he continued.
After picking up a child from the school, the 40-year-old lady who was driving the car made a U-turn and collided with the fence.
She was taken into custody at the scene and has subsequently been freed until additional investigation is conducted. There were no injuries to the child who was riding in the automobile.
