Pascal Liu, senior economist at the World Banana Forum, believes climate change poses a “enormous threat” to supply, exacerbating the effects of rapidly spreading illnesses.
The forum will gather in Rome on Tuesday to address the fruit industry’s difficulties.
Every year, the UK imports roughly 5 billion bananas, with around 90% sold through big retailers.
Last week, numerous UK stores reported banana shortages, which they attributed to storms at sea delaying shipments.
