The two males, ages 23 and 32, were caught up in the avalanche on Thursday morning in the Wasatch Range of Utah.
In the last three days, there has been around 2.5 feet (76 cm) of heavy, wet snowfall in the area due to snow storms, according to Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center. The storms have also brought with them extremely powerful winds.
“Avalanche conditions can change in an instant with spring,” Mr. Gordon stated.
In addition, he called the avalanche’s location near Lone Peak “very serious” and “steep” terrain.
One of the tallest peaks in the Wasatch Range, Lone Peak looms over the state capital of Utah.
Experienced climbers and advanced back country skiers frequent it because of its rocky, steep terrain.
The two skiers’ families had been informed of their deaths, according to the sheriff’s office.
