On Wednesday, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake rocked portions of eastern Turkey, but authorities said there were no early reports of casualties.
The earthquake struck Kale, Malatya, at 10:46 a.m. (0746 GMT). The region had been severely affected by the disastrous 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on February 6, 2023, killing almost 53,500 people in Turkey and about 6,000 in Syria.
“As of right now, there has been no loss of life or property damage following the magnitude 5.9 earthquake,” said a post on X from Turkey’s AFAD disaster management service.
Three buildings had “partially collapsed” in different locations, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya subsequently acknowledged, and emergency services had received several dozen calls for assistance.
