A young ice skater who has been chosen to represent Britain at an international competition and has family in Ukraine says he feels obligated to demonstrate that he is capable of doing what “needs to be done.”
In December, Edward Solovyov, a native of Cramlington, Northumberland, made his debut and won the British Under-19s figure skating championship.
Then, at the European Youth Olympics Festival (EYOF) in Georgia, the 15-year-old was chosen to represent Team GB.
“It feels like I’ve got a responsibility to show the world, you can look past anything and still make good things out of it,” he added, referring to family members who were fighting against the Russian invasion.
The parents of Edward, who are Ukrainian, immigrated to England over 20 years ago.
