NEW DELHI: More than a year after the US claimed to have thwarted a conspiracy involving Indian connections to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader in the US, India on Tuesday requested that the US designate a Sikh separatist group as a terrorist organization, according to an Indian government source.
In an incident that put the burgeoning India-US friendship to the test, Washington made the plot public in November 2023 and later accused a former Indian secret service official of masterminding it against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the general counsel of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and a dual US-Canada citizen.
India established a commission to look into Washington’s claims, denied any official involvement in the plot, and stated in January that the panel had found against an unidentified individual.
