Alongside the grinning interior minister and head of the Philippine National Police, Alice Guo is seen smiling broadly and giving the peace sign. The picture was purportedly taken in Jakarta late on Thursday before they boarded a private jet headed for Manila.
The narrative of Ms. Guo, which includes questionable accounts of her childhood, illegal scam centers, and citizenship issues, has captivated the Philippines for months.
Following a weeks-long pursuit, she was apprehended on Wednesday just outside of Jakarta.
Authorities claim that Ms. Guo shielded human trafficking organizations and scam centers that made use of Pogos or internet casinos.
Her case has brought to light the long-standing use of internet casinos by mainland Chinese customers as a cover for organized crime.
Legislators have also charged Ms. Guo with falsifying her Chinese nationality and Filipino citizenship in order to enable her to seek public office and get elected on her first attempt, despite her lack of political experience.
