According to a letter from ArcelorMittal to levelling-up secretary Michael Gove, approving the closure and reconstruction of a portion of Chatham Docks would have “seismic adverse consequences… [for] the British economy and multiple strategic industries,” as seen by News.
In the correspondence from Matthew Brooks, the head of ArcelorMittal’s building solutions division in the United Kingdom, the company requests that Mr. Gove issue an immediate directive to permit a more thorough government review of the redevelopment plans prior to Medway Council’s vote on Wednesday.
“There is a tight deadline; submitting the application after next Wednesday won’t be accepted.
ArcelorMittal would “regrettably be left with no alternative but to leave Chatham Docks and, more than likely, cease operations in Britain, given the lack of suitable alternative sites,” he said if the proposals were granted.
