Just before 3 p.m., Facebook outages were reported on Down Detector, with over 300,000 issues recorded.
The service, which compiles status information from many sources, including users, also recorded more than 25,000 Instagram outages.
Some users were unable to log in due to Facebook issues, while others were shut out and unable to access their accounts or reset their passwords.
Users of Instagram were having trouble loading comments, stories, and timelines.
By 6:00 p.m., the social networking sites were operational again, according to Meta, the parent firm.
Meta also owns WhatsApp, which didn’t seem to be impacted by the issues.
