GUWAHATI, INDIA: In the turbulent eastern Indian border state of Manipur, ethnic turmoil has continued for three days in a row, with at least one person killed in the last 24 hours, a government official said Monday.
Part of a long-running conflict between its ethnic Kuki and Meitei tribes, the 3.2 million-person state that borders Myanmar has seen a recent wave of violence. Since May of last year, the violence has caused at least 250 deaths and 60,000 displaced persons in the area.
In reaction to recent killings of women and children in the Jiribam district, Meitei villagers rushed to the streets late on Sunday night and vandalized buildings, according to a state government official.
