After air pollution reached its highest level of the season, authorities in the capital of India closed schools, stopped construction, and prohibited non-essential transportation from entering the city.
After heavy fog overnight, a thick layer of deadly haze covered most of northern India on Monday. According to Swiss company IQAir’s live rankings, the “hazardous” air quality in some regions of Delhi’s National Capital Territory (NCT) reached a new high of 1,081.
India’s pollution control authority said the national capital territory’s 24-hour air quality index (AQI) score was 484, classed as “severe plus”, the highest this year.
According to experts, the ratings differ because different nations employ different scales to convert pollutant concentrations into AQI.
