A drought alert has been issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in response to rainfall that is well below average nationwide, with some areas seeing a 62% shortage.
The agriculture industry, which employs 37% of the labor force and accounts for roughly a quarter of Pakistan’s GDP, is severely impacted financially by the lack of rain.
According to a previous PMD alert, Pakistan experienced 40% less rainfall than normal between September 1, 2024, and March 21, 2025.
At 62%, Sindh had the biggest deficit, followed by Balochistan at 52%. Rainfall in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was 35% below average, Azad Jammu & Kashmir was 29% below average, and Punjab was 38% below average.
