According to a TUC poll of 1,000 LGBT+ individuals, one in five lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals reported having experienced verbal abuse at work in the previous five years.
Over 25% of participants reported encountering homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic comments either made to them or while they were around.
Because of their sexual orientation, one in twenty workers said they had been the target of physical abuse, threats, or intimidation at work.
According to the union organization, it is not unexpected that around 30% of LGBT+ individuals concealed their sexual orientation from their employers.
According to the report, young LGBT+ employees between the ages of 18 and 24 are facing more discrimination at work on all metrics.
“This new report shines a light on the extent of discrimination LGBT+ workers face in our workplaces,” stated Paul Nowak, general secretary of the TUC.
“Instead of being protected and supported at work, LGBT+ individuals are facing startlingly high rates of harassment and assault, as well as bullying.
Nobody should believe that just because a coworker identifies as LGBT+, it’s acceptable to treat them unfairly or pose improper questions, much less commit violent crimes against them.
