ISLAMABAD: On Saturday, Dr. Syed Asif Kirmani, the former political secretary of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, announced his resignation from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) following criticism of the party’s top leadership.
In an unexpected remark made today, Kirmani claimed that he has long since cut ties with the Nawaz-led party’s political activities.
Criticizing the PML-N administration, the politician claimed that although a number of politicians were applauding the rulers for their “ineffective governance,” the people were “dying of [inflated] power bills and inflation.”
“Sahib Nawaz Sharif! Everything is not right.
He made no mention of joining another party, though. Kirmani continued by saying he will make a thorough announcement regarding his choice to leave the party shortly.
During his tenure as prime minister in 2013, Nawaz hired Kirmani as his political secretary. He was regarded as the former premier’s close friend and actively participated in the PML-N’s 2013 election campaign, which saw the party win power.
Kirmani became the most recent leader of the PML-N to resign from the party due to disagreements with the political stance of the senior party leadership and its choice to form the government after the elections on February 8th, even in the face of accusations of election manipulation.
Abbas Khan Afridi recently announced his departure from the ruling party last month, saying that Nawaz Sharif was “no longer relevant in the country’s politics.”
