Only three months after being chosen, Dr. Faustine Ndugulile of Tanzania, the new regional head of the World Health Organization in Africa, passed away.
According to Tanzania’s speaker of parliament, Ndugulile, a 55-year-old lawmaker and physician, passed away in India on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment.
As deputy health minister in 2020, he is renowned for opposing President John Magufuli during the height of the Covid outbreak.
He was chosen to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti of Botswana, who has held the position for two five-year mandates, as the regional head of the WHO in August of this year.
He was scheduled to start the position in February of the following year.
