Film critics were drawn to Saltburn because of a significant plot hole in a sequence from the 2007 comedy Superbad.
The plot of the thriller-comedy, which was directed by Oscar winner Emerald Fennell, centers on Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford student who receives an invitation to spend the summer at his family’s Saltburn estate from Felix Cotton (Jacob Elordi), a wealthy classmate.
In the scene where Oliver first meets Felix’s family, he walks into the home’s library where everyone is gathered around a TV, enjoying an R-rated comedy starring Michael Cera and Jonah Hill.

Emerald commented to Messenger Entertainment about the film, saying, “It was really gratifying, getting the first introduction we have in Saltburn to Richard E. Grant, who we assume is going to be a stuffy aristocrat dad, is that he is absolutely screaming at laughter at Superbad.”
But the outlet noted that while Superbad was released in 2007, Oliver landed in Saltburn in the beginning of the summer of 2007.
Emerald insisted, “This film takes place in the summer of 2007, which was also the time that Superbad came out in British movie theaters,” refusing to acknowledge that she had missed that element.
