ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, a number of legal organizations petitioned the Supreme Court (SC) to establish a complete court to consider claims that intelligence services had meddled in legal proceedings.
The Balochistan Bar Council and the Balochistan High Court Bar have filed several appeals requesting directions from the highest court to stop such instances from happening again.
In addition to pleading with the court to guarantee that individuals who meddle in legal affairs face severe consequences, the petitions demand the annulment of the government-appointed one-man panel that looked into the claims.
The development occurs as the hearing in the suo motu case about the judges’ letter to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) complaining of interference in judicial proceedings is scheduled to resume with a seven-member SC panel. It is noteworthy that on March 25, judges from the Indian High Court (IHC), including Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Babar Sattar, Arbab Muhammad Tahir, Tariq Mahmood Jehangiri, Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, and Saman Rifat Imtiaz, demanded that CJP Isa call a Judicial Convention to discuss the issue of intelligence agents interfering with court proceedings or intimidating judges in a way that compromises the independence of the judiciary.
