On Saturday, President Nawaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) called for providing “unwavering support to armed forces and security institutions to root out terrorism from the country” following the announcement of a new anti-terrorism campaign called Operation Azm-e-Istehkam (Resolve for Stability).
Nawaz stated, “[The] issues which were countered seven years ago have now become a serious crisis, again,” at a meeting with Irfan Siddiqui, the PML-N Parliamentary Leader in the Senate, today in Murree.
The former prime minister attacked the opposition’s criticism of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, claiming that some forces were not interested in [fortifying] democracy and were instead responsible for “instability” and “defamation” of the nation overseas.
In order to end the threat of terrorism, he insisted that all parties involved provide the security institutions with unwavering support.
After Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided to call an all-parties conference (APC) to reassure all stakeholders about the recently launched anti-terrorism operation—a reenergized and reinvigorated national counter-terrorism drive in response to a spike in terrorist attacks—the top leader of the PML-N made the statement.
