Around 11.15 a.m. on Monday, workmen renovating a property at an address in Bishop Auckland’s Fore Bondgate found the human remains in an upstairs room.
Following the finding, Durham Constabulary opened an investigation and stated that on Tuesday, police teams were recovering the remains from the structure and conducting a thorough search.
Mel Sutherland, a detective chief inspector, stated: “We are still early in our investigations.
“Obviously, this is a sensitive enquiry and at this point we remain open-minded as to the circumstances surrounding the death” .
To study the skeleton, forensic analysts have been brought in, one of them being an expert in anthropology.
Additionally, detectives are tracking out the property’s former occupants.
Later this week, a CT scan and port-mortem investigation are scheduled to ascertain the cause of death.
