According to police on Wednesday, Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi, the commander of a Rohingya Muslim insurgent group, has been arrested by Bangladeshi authorities on suspicion of murder, sabotage, illegal entrance, and terrorist actions.
Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) chief Ataullah and ten other people were taken into custody Tuesday during a raid in the Narayanganj area, which is close to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
Ataullah led ARSA’s deadly campaign against Myanmar’s security forces in 2016 to recover the rights of the Rohingya, who feel they are persecuted by the country’s Buddhist majority, according to a report by the International Crisis Group.
In a number of films, he claimed credit for the attacks on Myanmar security forces and has been identified by analysts as the leader of ARSA.
