Shohely Akhter, a spinner for Bangladesh, was found guilty of violating the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption rule and was banned from all cricket for five years, the sport’s governing body announced on Tuesday.
In a 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup match against Australia, the 36-year-old openly acknowledged breaking five of the code’s prohibitions by approaching a Bangladeshi player and offered two million takas ($16,465) in exchange for getting hit out.
In a series of voice notes posted on Facebook, Akhter—who has participated in two one-day internationals and thirteen T20 internationals—made the approach. The player she spoke with reported it to the anti-corruption squad.
