Communities Secretary Michael Gove has revised the term in an effort to combat the rise in far-right and Islamist extremism during the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The revised definition, which went into effect today, defines extremism as “the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred, or intolerance” with the intention of “undermining, overturning, or replacing the UK’s system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights” or “negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others.”
People who “intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve” either of those goals are also included in it.
