The discussion concerning racism against players and supporters of East and South East Asian heritage has been reignited after Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game suspension for using a racist slur about teammate Son Heung-min.
The following data, which are cited by the anti-racism organization Kick It Out (KIO), show an increase in both reports of and occurrences of racism against East and South East Asian players:
Last season, East Asian players were the target of 55% of the racist incidents reported against them.
Only seven East and South East Asian players have been the target of 327 (35%), out of the 937 player-specific abuse allegations that KIO has received over the last five complete seasons.
