A bill that would expand the number of Supreme Court justices to 34 in an attempt to reduce the backlog of cases sailed through the National Assembly on Monday despite fierce opposition.
The measure was introduced in the lower house of parliament, which is presided over by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
As the law minister addressed the House, he stated: “This amendment will increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court up to 34, so that the backlog of cases can be cleared and that we can have judges to form the constitutional benches after the 26th amendment.”
According to Article 184, I of the Constitution (Twenty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2024 (XXVI of 2024), the Supreme Court of Pakistan is required to hear constitutional cases.
