US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order that significantly alters the nation’s citizenship regulations, particularly with regard to how the 14th Amendment is interpreted.
The new requirements for birthright citizenship established by this order would primarily impact people born in the US under specific circumstances, such as those born to temporary and illegal residents.
This order will no longer automatically grant US citizenship to those born in the US under certain conditions.
In particular, citizenship will not be awarded to children whose fathers were not US citizens or lawful permanent residents at the time of birth and whose mothers were in the country illegally.
