After losing the 2022 presidential race, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and some of his closest supporters were officially charged with allegedly planning a coup.
Federal police have also indicted Walter Braga Netto, Bolsonaro’s vice presidential candidate, and 35 other individuals for attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, and criminal organization.
It follows a nearly two-year probe into whether Bolsonaro’s claims that the election was rigged sparked an attempted coup.
Bolsonaro accused investigators of being “creative” and doing “everything that the law does not say” in a post on X, threatening to “fight” the charges in court.
