Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, is joining an increasing number of US friends who are discovering that, in Donald Trump’s view, the world is becoming a more hostile, unpredictable, and possibly dangerous place for them.
Hearing Trump’s sudden statement that he had welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin back to international diplomacy with a 90-minute phone chat, followed by a face-to-face meeting, possibly in Saudi Arabia, must have been awful enough for Zelensky.
The White House contacted Zelensky after Putin. The following morning, Zelensky told reporters in Ukraine that he “accepts the fact that Putin received the first call, although to be honest, it’s not very pleasant.”
Zelensky was even more offended when Trump called him after he had a conversation with Putin.
