In the men’s 200-meter freestyle, Britain features three of the top swimmers who are vying for Olympic spots. The Olympic champion is Tom Dean. Duncan Scott took home the silver medal at Tokyo 2020. Matt Richards took home the gold in the 2023 world championships.
This week in London, at the British Swimming Championships, which also serves as Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic trials, all three will compete in the event.
The drawback? There are just two spots available for this summer’s event in Paris.
Richards told the news, “It is scary because if it goes wrong, you are not going—it is that difficult.”
While Wales’ Richards, the youngest of the three at age 21, has been regarded as the next big thing in British swimming, England’s Dean and Scotland’s Scott have shared a room together.
He and Dean both aspire to be the first British athletes to win five medals in one Olympics.
