The proposal will grant all local transport authorities additional authority to manage their own bus services. It will be presented to parliament on Monday.
For now, only metro mayors have this kind of influence over services.
It won’t require parliamentary approval because it will be submitted as a statutory document.
The government has also started to take comments on streamlined guidelines in an effort to expedite and lower expenses for local authorities who want to take control of services.
This concept, called bus franchising, entails local governments allowing private businesses to operate in a particular area while maintaining control over essential elements.
Timetables, routes, and fares may be included in this.
The Department for Transport reports that since 2010, the total yearly mileage covered by buses in England has decreased by about 300 million miles.
In an effort to strengthen its support for franchising, the department intends to introduce a bus bill later in this legislative session.
